About 1,500 slices

The 1/4 inch crinkle-cut pail holds about 1,500 slices, the yield stated on our listing.

500 burgers at 3 chips

At 2 chips the pail covers about 750 burgers. At 4 chips, about 375.

Manufacturers agree

41.89 lbs includes the brine. The drained weight minimum is 22 lbs per the Cool Crisp spec sheet.

Cut changes the count

The Numbers

The fact table

The slice count comes off our own listing for this exact pail. The manufacturer rows come from the Kaiser Pickles and Cool Crisp (Gielow Pickles) spec sheets in the Sources section. They check our number, not replace it.

Why It Varies

Why the numbers online disagree

Counts for this pail format run from about 650 slices to about 1,700 slices. Both ends are real. They are measuring different things.

Most spec sheets do not count slices at all. They count servings by weight. Kaiser rates its 5-gallon pails at 324 servings of 1 oz (28 g) (Kaiser Pickles sellsheet, item 126192). On the 1/8 inch sheet a serving is about 2 large hamburger slices. On the 1/4 inch sheet it is about 5 slices, because a deli chip is smaller. Same servings per pail, very different counts. Cut and style move the number too, and Cool Crisp rates its 5-gallon crinkle-cut deli chips at 1,500 to 1,700.

Weight misleads too. The 41.89 lbs on our listing is the whole pail, brine included. The pickles are the drained weight, and Cool Crisp's spec sheet sets the minimum at 22 lbs for its 5-gallon crinkle-cut pails.

So for a 1/4 inch crinkle-cut deli chip in a 5-gallon class pail, plan on about 1,500 slices.

Field tip: Plan portions off the slice count, not the gross weight. The brine is part of the 41.89 lbs.
Worked Math

The math, worked

  • Slices per pail: about 1,500, the yield stated on our listing. Manufacturer check: 324 servings x about 5 slices = about 1,620 slices (calculated) on Kaiser's 1/4 inch sheet.
  • Burgers at 3 chips: 1,500 slices / 3 chips = 500 burgers.
  • Burgers at 2 chips: 1,500 / 2 = 750 burgers. Burgers at 4 chips: 1,500 / 4 = 375 burgers.
  • Cost per burger: our recorded pail prices are $126.77 CAD in August 2026 and $145.97 CAD in October 2026. As of October 2026, at 3 chips per burger the pickles cost $0.25 to $0.29 per burger (calculated: pail price / 500 burgers). At 4 chips the range is $0.34 to $0.39 per burger (calculated: pail price / 375 burgers). Pickles only. Bun, protein and other toppings are separate lines.

For Buyers

What it means for a buyer

We sell this pail out of Calgary through Chicken Pieces (chickenpieces.com), a Calgary foodservice wholesaler. The buyers are burger shops, delis and fried-chicken programs. They reorder in pairs: 4 pails sold across August and October 2026, 2 each time, at two prices. Buyers stock this format, they do not sample it.

One worked example: at 60 burgers a day and 3 chips per burger, one pail covers about 8 days. At the October recorded price of $145.97, that is about $17.52 of pickles a day (calculated).

Storage: keep the pail refrigerated, chips under their brine once open. Shelf life is 270 days refrigerated, per our listing and Cool Crisp's spec sheets.

Restaurants Canada reported in September 2026: 41% of restaurant companies are operating at a loss or just breaking even. Pickles are a small line on a burger's cost sheet, at $0.25 to $0.29 a burger, but small lines are the ones nobody checks.

The pail itself is here: Cool Crisp Pickle Chip 1/4 in. Crinkle Cut Deli 19L (41.89 lbs). Orders over $199 ship free anywhere in Canada.

Field tip: Keep the pail refrigerated and the chips under their brine once open.
Method

How we know this

The slice count started as a claim on our own listing, so we checked it against the manufacturers. Kaiser's sellsheet for the same format (Kaiser Pickles sellsheet, item 126192) works out to about 1,620 slices, and Cool Crisp's own spec sheet gives 1,500 to 1,700 for the same pail class. Our figure sits inside the manufacturer range, so we publish it with the checks beside it.

FAQ

The questions buyers ask before they order, answered from the fact table above.

How many pickle slices are in a 19 L pail?

About 1,500 slices in the 1/4 inch crinkle-cut pail we sell, the yield stated on our listing. Manufacturer spec sheets check out against it: Kaiser rates its 1/4 inch 5-gallon pail at 324 servings of about 5 slices, about 1,620 slices calculated, and Cool Crisp gives a count of 1,500 to 1,700 for its 5-gallon crinkle-cut deli chips.

How many burgers does a 19 L pail of pickle chips cover?

About 500 burgers at 3 chips per burger. At 2 chips per burger the pail covers about 750 burgers, and at 4 chips about 375. All calculated from about 1,500 slices per pail.

What is the pickle cost per burger?

At our recorded pail prices of $126.77 to $145.97 CAD, as of October 2026, the pickles cost $0.25 to $0.29 per burger at 3 chips, and $0.34 to $0.39 per burger at 4 chips. That is pickles only, not the bun, protein or other toppings.

Why do some 5-gallon pails list only about 650 slices?

Because slice counts follow the serving weight and the chip size, not the pail size. Kaiser's 1/8 inch sheet rates the same 324 servings per pail at about 2 large slices per serving, which is about 648 slices calculated. The 1/4 inch deli chip is a smaller piece, at about 5 slices per serving.

Is the 41.89 lbs on the pail the weight of the pickles?

No. 41.89 lbs (19 kg) is the gross weight of the full pail, brine included. The yield basis is the drained weight: Cool Crisp's spec sheet sets a minimum net drained weight of 22 lbs (10 kg) for its 5-gallon crinkle-cut pails. Plan portions off the slice count, not the gross weight.

How long does a 19 L pail last in a burger kitchen?

It depends on volume, so here is a worked example. At 60 burgers a day and 3 chips per burger, you use 180 slices a day and a pail of about 1,500 slices lasts about 8 days. Unopened and refrigerated, the pail carries a 270-day shelf life.

Sources

The questions buyers ask after they read the fact table, answered from operator threads and buyer guides.

How many pickle slices should a Canadian burger kitchen plan for per burger?
Plan on 3 chips per burger as your baseline. A regular on the r/Pickles thread counting a double cheeseburger reports 4 to 6 picks on the sandwich, while a line cook on the r/McDonaldsEmployees thread explains that house procedure usually doubles the standard portion, topping out near 4 chips. That is why our 19 L pail math runs 500 burgers at 3 chips, 750 at 2 chips and 375 at 4 chips. If you run a one-chip value burger, price the pail at 1,500 burgers instead.

Why do pickle labels claim far fewer pieces than the package count promises?
Because the count is a serving-weight claim, not a piece count. On the r/pickling thread about bulk pickle spear containers, the poster weighed the pack and found the label promised about 80 spears while the actual count was closer to 42, with the gap made up by brine. The same thread works out that 1 oz equals 28 grams equals about one spear. That is why our pail figure comes from a manufacturer yield range of about 1,500 slices, not a declared piece count.

Should I price pickles per burger at 2, 3 or 4 chips to build a Canadian menu?
Quote 3 chips per burger and show the alternatives on the cost sheet, because that is where the online numbers split. A regular on the r/1200isplenty thread working out pickle cost per ounce notes that an 80 oz bulk jar runs about 5 cents an ounce while single-serve packs work out far more per equivalent weight. The same arithmetic shows why a 19 L pail beats jars above 50 to 60 burgers a day. Set your standard at 3 chips, then track what the line actually drops.

What pickle style does a Canadian deli counter actually need for a burger program?
Stock refrigerated dill chips, not shelf-stable neon slices. On the r/AskCulinary thread hunting for the pickle slices found on restaurant burgers, cooks point out that delis use refrigerated pickles made with salt brine rather than vinegar, and that the refrigerated case is where the food service product lives. Another commenter in the same thread runs a restaurant and buys pickles for the line, naming crispness and shelf life as the reasons. Order the 19 L pail and keep it cold.

How should pickles be layered on a burger so the bun does not go soggy?
Keep wet ingredients off the bun and the pickles away from the heat. On the r/AskCulinary thread on building a burger, one cook layers mayo first, then lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese and meat, and notes that chain kitchens always have a deliberate order for consistency. On a second r/AskCulinary thread the rule is stated plainly: cold items go as far from the patty as possible. Drain chips well before assembly and place them above the patty, not on the heel.

How long can an opened pail of pickle chips stay in service in a Canadian kitchen?
Treat the brine as your date clock, not the cut-off date on the carton. On the r/AskCulinary thread about storing opened pickles, cooks report keeping opened jars refrigerated for weeks with no loss of quality, because the brine and vinegar keep them fresh. Another r/AskCulinary thread on pickle brine shelf life calls it practically immortal thanks to its acidity and salt. Still, date-mark the pail when opened, keep it at 4 °C or below, and pull it if the brine clouds or smells off.

Should a Canadian burger kitchen charge for extra pickles, and is that worth money?
Free extra pickles are cheap goodwill, but they are not free. A former Canadian quick-service employee on the r/AskACanadian pickle policy thread says she used to hand out a huge pile of pickles and it never crossed her mind to charge more. A line cook on the r/McDonaldsEmployees thread notes the standard extra procedure only doubles the usual portion, so a 3 chip standard becomes 4 or 6. Price the standard 3 chips into your cost card and treat anything beyond it as a portioning decision.

How should I store a 19 L pail of pickle chips on delivery and between services?
Keep it refrigerated at 4 °C or below from the moment it arrives, and rotate stock the way you rotate any chilled product. Health Canada's safe food storage guidance is explicit that the danger zone sits between 4 °C and 60 °C, and that a refrigerator needs to hold 4 °C or lower to keep food out of it. Your pickles arrive in brine, which protects them, but the pail still needs cold space in the walk-in, away from the line and the door.

What does a Canadian buyer need on the label of a bulk pickle pail?
Check that the pail carries a proper net quantity declaration before you accept the delivery. The CFIA food labelling requirements checklist asks whether a net quantity declaration is present, whether it is declared on the principal display panel, whether it is in metric units, and whether the appropriate manner of measurement is used for the product, volume, weight or count. For a 19 L pail, weight is the useful number, since drained net weight is what you are really buying.

Why do nutrition labels say pickle slices have zero calories, and should a Canadian kitchen care?
Zero means rounded down, not empty. On the r/WeightLossAdvice thread about cucumbers versus pickles, one reply explains that a serving is usually only 2 or 3 slices, and another points out the real difference is sodium, comparing 4 oz of pickles at 1,370 mg against 2.2 mg for the same weight of cucumber. A separate r/Volumeeating thread makes the same point about serving sizes. For a menu, calories matter less than sodium per burger, so count the chips and publish that figure.
