A powder food thickener is mixed into drinks or pureed foods so the liquid flows more slowly. That slower flow helps people with dysphagia swallow more safely when their care team has prescribed a thicker consistency.
Canadian long-term care homes, hospitals and home-care programs use powder thickeners when staff thicken at the bedside or in the kitchen. Pre-thickened beverages cover many routine drinks. Powder still matters for ad-hoc items, hot drinks and foods that arrive thin. Always follow the IDDSI level set by the resident's speech-language pathologist.
