Mix 6 mL of Ortho Killex concentrate in 1 L of water to treat 5 square metres (about 50 sq ft). In a 4 L (1 gallon) tank sprayer that is 24 mL of concentrate for 20 square metres, and in a 15 L backpack sprayer it is 90 mL for 75 square metres. With the Scotts Dial N Spray hose-end sprayer, set the dial to 6. Mixed at the label rate, one 1 L bottle makes about 167 L of spray and covers roughly 800 square metres, or 8,000 sq ft, which is why the bottle is sold as 8,000 sq ft coverage. Do not use a stronger mix; it does not kill weeds faster and can brown the grass.

What weeds does Killex kill, and does it kill crabgrass or grass?

Killex is a selective broadleaf herbicide. It kills dandelion, white and red clover, chickweed, ground ivy (creeping charlie), plantain, ragweed, oxalis, shepherd's purse, knotweed and Canada thistle without harming established Kentucky bluegrass, fescue or perennial ryegrass. It does not kill grassy weeds: crabgrass, quackgrass and nutsedge are not controlled, and it should not be used on bentgrass lawns. Because it is a systemic product absorbed through the leaves, it also damages flowers, vegetables, shrubs and tree roots it drifts onto, so spray only on calm days and keep it off garden beds.

How long does Killex take to work?

Weeds start to twist and curl within 24 to 48 hours of a Killex application in good conditions. Most dandelions and clover turn brown and collapse in 7 to 10 days, and full kill of tough weeds such as thistle and ground ivy takes 2 to 3 weeks. Results are slower below 10 C or when weeds are drought-stressed, because the plant is not moving the herbicide to its roots. Weeds that survive after 3 to 4 weeks can be treated a second time.

How long does Killex need before rain, and can I water after?

Killex is rainfast 4 hours after it dries on the leaf, but the label says not to apply if rain is expected within 24 hours and not to water the lawn for 24 hours after spraying. Should I mow before or after applying Killex?

Do not mow for 2 days before or 2 days after applying Killex. Weeds need enough leaf area to absorb the spray, and the product needs 48 hours to move down into the root before the treated leaves are cut off. Apply when the lawn is dry and weeds are actively growing, usually late May to June or September in most of Canada. After the 2-day wait you can mow as normal, but leave clippings on the lawn rather than composting them for the first two cuts.

Is Killex safe for pets and kids?

Keep children and pets off the treated lawn until the spray has fully dried, typically 2 to 3 hours. Wet 2,4-D can irritate paws and cause vomiting if a dog licks it, but once dry it does not transfer easily. Many veterinarians recommend a 24 to 48 hour wait for dogs that eat grass.
