Standard vending chip bags in Canada hold 40 to 45 g and are packed 40 to 48 bags per case, for example Lay’s and Ruffles 40 g in 48-count cases and Doritos 45 g. Multipack school and lunch-box bags are smaller, about 24 to 28 g. Large sharing bags run 200 to 300 g. For a break room, plan about one single-serve bag per person per day for chips, and mix in lower-fat options such as popcorn and pretzels.
Shelf life varies by product, so always check the best-before date. Potato chips typically have about 8 to 12 weeks from production, because the oil slowly turns stale. Popcorn and pretzels last a little longer. Cookies, crackers and snack bars usually keep 6 to 12 months. Roasted nuts keep about 6 to 12 months sealed. Store snacks in a cool, dry room out of sunlight, and rotate first in, first out when restocking vending machines and pantries.
Many Canadian schools, camps and daycares ask families to avoid peanuts and tree nuts. Check each product’s ingredient list and allergen statement for peanuts and tree nuts, and also for “may contain” warnings, which mean the product is made on shared equipment. Plain chips, popcorn, pretzels, crackers and many cheese snacks are common nut-free choices, but formulas change, so read the current label on every case rather than relying on a past order.
A balanced break-room mix offers roughly one-third salty snacks, one-third sweet snacks and one-third better-for-you options such as popcorn, nuts, seeds, granola and cereal bars, and seaweed snacks. Popcorn is a whole grain and has fewer calories per serving than fried chips. Single-serve packs help with portion control and stay fresh longer than open bulk bags. Restock based on what empties first, and keep a few gluten-free and nut-free options for staff with allergies.
For a reception or event with other food, plan about 1 to 2 single-serve snack bags per guest. For a kids’ event or a long day such as a tournament, plan 2 to 3 per child. For a sharing table, plan about 30 to 60 g of chips, popcorn or pretzels per guest. Buying by the case lowers the cost per bag, and unopened cases can be stored for later events within the best-before date.
