Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for Canadian buyers
What is the difference between a floor lift and a sit-to-stand lift?

A full-body floor lift (often called a Hoyer lift) lifts a person in a sling from a bed, chair or floor and is used for people who cannot bear weight on their legs. A sit-to-stand lift helps a person who can bear some weight and hold on with their arms rise from sitting to standing for transfers and toileting. Ceiling lifts run on an installed track and save floor space. The right type depends on the person’s weight-bearing ability, which a health professional should assess.

How do I choose the right sling?

Slings are sized by the manufacturer’s chart, usually using the person’s weight and measurements such as hip width or back length, and come in styles such as full-body, toileting and bathing slings. Slings are generally designed for specific lift brands and attachment types (clips, loops or keyhole), so use slings approved by the lift maker. Inspect slings before every use and replace any with frayed straps or worn labels.

What weight capacity should a patient lift have?

Home floor lifts are commonly rated for about 155 to 205 kg (340 to 450 lb), and heavy-duty models for about 225 kg (500 lb) or more. The rated capacity of the sling must also cover the person’s weight, and the lower of the two limits applies. Choose a lift with a capacity above the person’s current weight to allow a safety margin.

How many caregivers are needed to use a patient lift?

Many care facilities require two trained caregivers for transfers with a mechanical floor lift, and manufacturers stress following their instructions and training. At home, some lifts are designed for use by one trained caregiver, but the safest approach is to follow the manufacturer’s guidance and any care plan from the home care team. Lock the bed or chair wheels, keep the lift’s base wheels unlocked during the lift, and never leave the person unattended in the sling.

How does a bath lift work?

A bath lift lowers a person into the bathtub and raises them back out, so they can bathe without having to climb or kneel. Inflatable models such as the Mangar Bathing Cushion sit flat in the tub and inflate with a quiet battery-powered compressor to lift the person to the tub rim, then deflate to lower them. They are portable and need no installation, which suits homes and travel.
