Outdoor Chairs

An Adirondack chair is an outdoor chair with a low, slanted seat, a tall sloped back and wide flat armrests that can hold a drink or plate. The design comes from the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, where Thomas Lee built the first version, the Westport chair, in 1903. Its relaxed angle makes it a favourite for decks, docks, lawns and fire pits, and resin versions make it low maintenance.

Resin (plastic or poly lumber) chairs resist rot, splinters, insects and moisture, do not need painting or sealing, and clean with soap and water, which makes them the low-maintenance choice for rentals and patios. Wood chairs, such as cedar, look natural but need sealing or staining every year or two to prevent weathering. Metal frames are strong but can get hot in the sun and may rust if the finish is damaged.

Bring cushions and fabric covers indoors for the winter so they do not grow mould or crack in the cold. Clean the chairs, let them dry, and store them in a shed or garage, or cover them with breathable furniture covers. Avoid knocking snow or ice off resin chairs with force in deep cold, when plastics are less flexible, and keep chairs off standing water.

Keep chairs far enough from a fire pit that sparks cannot land on them and heat does not soften or scorch them; plastic and resin chairs can deform if placed too close to flames. Follow your municipality’s fire pit bylaws, which set rules on where fire pits can be used and how far they must be from buildings and property lines, and never leave a fire unattended.

Wash resin chairs with warm water and a mild dish soap using a soft brush, then rinse and air dry; avoid harsh solvents, which can dull the finish. For mildew, use a solution of water with a little white vinegar. Spot-clean cushions with mild soap, let them dry fully in the sun, and stand them on their edges after rain so water drains out.
