Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for Canadian buyers
Should I choose a 3-wheel or a 4-wheel mobility scooter?

A 3-wheel scooter has a tighter turning radius and more legroom, so it is easier to use indoors, in stores and in small spaces. A 4-wheel scooter has a wider base, so it is more stable on uneven ground, slopes, gravel and curb cuts, which suits regular outdoor use. Many people who mostly travel outdoors or have balance concerns choose 4 wheels; people who mostly use the scooter indoors choose 3.

How far can a mobility scooter go on one charge?

Range depends on the scooter class. Folding and travel scooters typically go about 10 to 16 km (6 to 10 miles) per charge, mid-size scooters about 20 to 30 km, and full-size scooters up to about 40 km or more. Real range is lower with a heavier rider, hills, rough ground and cold weather, which reduces battery capacity, so choose a scooter rated for more than your usual trip. Charge the battery after each use.

Can I take a mobility scooter on a plane?

Airlines generally carry mobility aids such as scooters for passengers who need them, but batteries have strict rules. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly limited to 300 watt-hours and must usually be removed and carried in the cabin, while some sealed lead-acid batteries can stay installed. Folding travel scooters with removable batteries are designed for this. Contact the airline at least 48 hours before the flight with the scooter’s model, weight and battery details.

Where can I ride a mobility scooter in Canada?

In most provinces, people using a mobility scooter are treated as pedestrians: they use sidewalks, paths and crosswalks, and do not need a driver’s licence or vehicle registration. Rules and speed limits vary by province and municipality, and some cities set specific bylaws, so check locally. Use a flag, lights and reflectors when riding near traffic, especially in winter when daylight is short.

Mobility scooter, power wheelchair or rollator: which do I need?

A rollator is a walker with wheels, brakes and a seat, for people who can walk but need support and rest stops. A mobility scooter suits people who can walk short distances and sit upright with good arm strength, since it is steered with a handlebar (tiller). A power wheelchair is steered with a joystick and gives more postural support for people who use it most of the day. An occupational therapist can assess which device fits best.
