Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for Canadian buyers
Ground blind or elevated blind: which is better?

Ground blinds are portable, quick to set up and work well for bowhunting, turkey hunting and moving with the game. Elevated box blinds give a wider view and longer shooting lanes, help carry the hunter’s scent above the animals, and offer more protection from wind and cold, which suits long sits in Canadian late seasons. Elevated blinds are heavier, need anchoring, and are usually left in place for the season.

How early should a hunting blind be set up before the season?

Set up a new blind 2 to 3 weeks or more before you plan to hunt from it, so deer get used to it as part of the landscape. Brush it in with local branches and grass, place it with the prevailing wind in mind and away from main trails, and avoid disturbing the area while it settles. Hard-sided elevated blinds left up year-round become part of the scenery and are often the most effective.

How do blinds help with scent and visibility?

Blinds hide movement, which is the main thing game animals notice, as long as the inside stays dark: wear dark clothing and keep windows on the side behind you closed so you are not silhouetted. Elevated blinds help lift scent above ground level, but wind direction still matters, so set up with the prevailing wind blowing from the game toward you. Open only the windows you need to shoot through.

How should an elevated blind be anchored and checked?

Anchor elevated blinds and towers with the manufacturer’s anchor kit or guy wires so wind cannot tip them, and set them on level, firm ground. Inspect the stand, bolts and ladder before each season and after storms, and replace worn parts. Use a fall-arrest harness and a lifeline when climbing tower stands, and raise unloaded firearms or bows with a haul line rather than carrying them up.

Do I need to wear blaze orange in a hunting blind?

Blaze (hunter) orange rules are set by each province and depend on the season and method, such as firearm or archery. Several provinces require hunter orange during firearm seasons, and some have specific rules for hunters inside blinds, including blind markings. Check your province’s current hunting regulations before the season, and wear orange when walking to and from the blind for safety.
