Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for Canadian buyers
What is a hi-lo treatment table?

A hi-lo treatment table has an electric lift that lowers the surface close to seated height so a patient can sit and transfer safely, then raises it to the practitioner’s working height. This reduces strain on both the patient and the therapist, which is why it is standard in physiotherapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy and massage clinics. Stationary tables cost less but are fixed at one height, so choose the height to suit the main practitioner.

What is the difference between a treatment table and an exam table?

An exam table is designed for physician examinations: it usually has a step, a raised back section, a paper roll holder and storage drawers or cabinets in the base. A treatment table is a flat, padded surface for hands-on therapy such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage, often with a face hole and adjustable sections. Clinics often need both: exam tables in consult rooms and treatment tables in therapy areas.

What size is a standard homecare or hospital bed?

A standard homecare (hospital) bed is about 91 x 203 cm (36 x 80 in), narrower than a twin bed, with extended versions about 213 cm (84 in) long and bariatric beds about 107 to 122 cm (42 to 48 in) wide. Fully electric beds adjust the head, foot and overall height by remote; semi-electric beds adjust head and foot electrically but height with a manual crank. Use a mattress made for the bed so it fits the frame and rails snugly.

Why do bed rails and mattress fit matter?

Gaps between bed rails, the mattress and the headboard can trap a person’s head or body, which is a known safety risk for older adults and people with confusion or limited mobility. Health Canada has published guidance on bed entrapment for adult hospital beds. To reduce the risk, use rails and mattresses designed for the bed, check that the mattress fits snugly with no large gaps, and ask a health professional whether rails are needed at all.

What is a pediatric hospital crib?

A pediatric hospital crib, also called a safety crib, has high side rails and often a top cover, so children with special needs, seizures or behaviour that puts them at risk of falling or wandering can sleep safely at home. HARD Manufacturing cribs come in lengths of about 152, 183 and 211 cm (60, 72 and 83 in) by 91 cm (36 in) wide to fit growing children and teens. A health care team usually recommends the type and size.
