Cost your amenities

Nobody prices a listing around the bar of soap. But the soap, the shampoo, the coffee pods, the bottled water and the snack basket add up to a real number per stay, and it happens hundreds of times a year. Buying by the bottle at a grocery store instead of by the case is usually the whole gap.

The formula

Cost each = case price ÷ units in the case. Cost per stay = Σ(cost each × units a guest uses). Multiply by stays a month for the monthly figure.

What a good number looks like

$3 to $5 a stay

Normal for a one-bedroom with a decent welcome basket.

$5 to $8

Fine for a premium listing. Check you are buying by the case.

Over $8

Something is being bought retail, or guests are taking home the spare rolls.

What to do about it

  • Buy by the case. Foodservice suppliers sell hotel amenities in 100-packs at a fraction of the retail unit price.
  • Leave enough for the stay, not enough for the month. Restock between guests.
  • Put the amenity budget in the nightly rate as its own line so it is never squeezed.

Now do it with your numbers.
