How to price a wedding photography package

Eight hours on the day is the small part. The desk hours, the second shooter and the camera that wears out are the price.

Price your package

A wedding is a day of shooting and two or three days of editing, plus the consults, the timeline and the delivery. Price the day and you work the rest for free. Price every hour at the rate you need, add the hard costs, add a profit for the business, and that is the package.

The formula

Hours = shooting + shooting × editing ratio + admin. Cost = hours × your rate + second shooter + gear wear + album + travel. Price = cost × (1 + profit). Your real hourly at any price = (price − hard costs) ÷ hours.

What a good number looks like

Asked price at or above yours

Take it. Deliver everything you promised and nothing you did not.

Between cost and your price

It covers costs, not profit. Fine for a portfolio piece, not for a season.

Under cost

You would pay to shoot this wedding. Say no kindly.

What to do about it

  • Track your editing ratio for three weddings. Most photographers spend 2 to 4 desk hours per shooting hour.
  • Divide the camera's replacement cost by the weddings it will survive. That is gear wear per wedding.
  • Set your rate from your yearly take-home target, tax, insurance and the months with no weddings.

Now do it with your numbers.
