Estimate this quarter

Under IFTA you pay fuel tax based on where the kilometres were driven, not where the diesel was bought. Every quarter the two are reconciled: tax owed in each jurisdiction against tax already paid at its pumps. Drive through a high-tax province on fuel bought in a low-tax state and you owe the difference.

The formula

Fleet L/km = total litres bought ÷ total km. Fuel used in a jurisdiction = its km × fleet L/km. Tax owed = fuel used × its rate per litre. Tax paid = litres bought there × its rate. Net = owed − paid, summed across jurisdictions.

What a good number looks like

Net credit

You bought where tax is high and drove where it is low. Nothing to set aside.

Small bill

Normal. Set it aside now so the filing is not a surprise.

Large bill

Buying habits are mismatched with the lanes. Fuel up before the high-tax border, not after.

What to do about it

  • Pull km per jurisdiction from the ELD trip report, not from memory.
  • Rates change every quarter. Update them from the official table before you estimate.
  • This is a planning number. File with the official rates and your fuel receipts.

Now do it with your numbers.
