The commission comes off the top, then packaging. The markup that makes an app order earn what an in-house order earns.

Check an app order

A 30% commission on an $18 dish is $5.40 before the food and the box. Most menus lose money on every app order unless the app price is higher than the dine-in price. The calculator finds the markup that closes the gap.

The formula

App profit = app price × (1 − commission) − food − packaging. Markup to match in-house = (menu price + packaging) ÷ (1 − commission) ÷ menu price − 1.

What to do about it

  • Run a separate app menu with the markup built in. Customers expect it.
  • Drop items that travel badly; refunds are pure loss.
  • Count packaging per order, lids and bags included.
